Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.
We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Device Trust Platform team, the group responsible for the lower-level platforms that power 1Password Device Trust and that will, over time, underpin Device Security and the broader 1Password security platform. These systems ingest, process, and store a high volume of telemetry from the devices our customers depend on. Our customers expect this to work with Tier 0 reliability: the services this team owns are always on, and when something fails, it fails over without anyone noticing.
This is an end-to-end team responsible for the data pipelines, storage systems, and infrastructure that keep the product reliable at scale, as well as the application code that runs on top of them. You will lead a group of senior and staff engineers who are already deep in this architecture, and you will grow the team over time, adding engineers as the platform's scope expands and onboarding new hires into a team with high operational standards.
You will be responsible for the resiliency and reliability of our applications. That means owning availability targets, incident response, capacity, and the architectural decisions that keep a multi-region system honest. It also means running a healthy engineering team: planning, design reviews, career growth, and hiring. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Engineering for Device Trust.
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
- 3+ years managing and mentoring software engineering teams, including senior and staff engineers, with a track record of engineers growing in scope and seniority under your leadership.
- A strong background in the infrastructure behind highly reliable, high-volume data systems: ingestion pipelines, streaming or queueing systems, large datastores, and the operational tooling around them.
- Hands-on experience operating multi-region systems with failover and redundancy, and owning availability for a service customers treat as critical: SLOs, incident response, postmortems, and the follow-through that keeps incidents from recurring.
- Experience owning production observability: instrumentation, dashboards, alerting, and using telemetry to drive reliability and capacity decisions. Datadog experience is strongly preferred.
- Significant hands-on development experience and strong technical judgment: you can review the code your team writes and partner with staff engineers on architecture and system design.
- Demonstrated success leading a hybrid team that spans infrastructure and application engineering on one roadmap.
- A leadership style grounded in empowering the team: you set direction, clear the path, and defer to the engineers closest to the problem, staying calm and structured under pressure.
- Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including explaining reliability risk and trade-offs to product and leadership partners.
Bonus points for:
- Experience with Ruby on Rails applications at scale, or with Go services and agent-based data collection.
- Experience with osquery, endpoint telemetry, or other device-data pipelines.
- Experience running Kubernetes-based platforms on AWS or another major cloud, including infrastructure-as-code.
- Experience managing remote and distributed teams.
- Experience building systems that balance rapid iteration with enterprise-grade security and compliance requirements.
- Deep experience with Datadog, including APM, log management, custom metrics, and SLO-based monitoring.
What you can expect:
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and grow a team of senior and staff engineers who own the platform layer of Device Trust, measuring your success by the team's success rather than your own visibility.
- Hire, onboard, and integrate new engineers as the team grows and as Device Security and other 1Password products come to depend on these platforms.
- Give engineers room to design the solutions they believe are right for customers, while holding them accountable to outcomes. The team closest to the problem makes the technical call; you make sure they have the context, time, and support to make it well.
- Spend your time listening and removing obstacles: unclear priorities, missing context, cross-team dependencies, and process that slows the team down. Advocate for the team's needs with leadership and partner teams.
- Support career development through regular feedback, mentorship, and growth planning, including the path from senior to staff.
- Foster a culture of ownership, trust, and psychological safety, where incidents produce learning rather than blame, and lead by example on transparency, follow-through, and humility.
Reliability and Operations
- Own the reliability and resiliency of Device Trust applications and the platforms beneath them, against a Tier 0 expectation from customers.
- Define and maintain SLOs, error budgets, and the monitoring and alerting that make them meaningful.
- Lead the on-call program for the team: rotation design, escalation paths, and runbooks that let any engineer respond with confidence.
- Run incident response and blameless postmortems, and drive remediation work to completion.
- Plan and execute multi-region failover, disaster recovery, and capacity work, and verify it with regular exercises rather than assumptions.
Observability
- Own observability for the Device Trust platform as a product in its own right: metrics, logs, traces, and the dashboards, monitors, and SLOs built on them in Datadog, our observability platform.
- Continue the work already underway on the team to instrument services end to end, so that latency, throughput, error rates, and data freshness are visible per customer, per region, and per pipeline stage.
- Make the health of the platform legible to people outside the team, including support, product, and leadership, through dashboards and status reporting that answer "is it working" without an engineer in the loop.
- Treat alert quality as an engineering problem: reduce noise, tie alerts to SLOs, and ensure every page has a runbook and an owner.
- Use observability data to drive capacity planning and to find reliability risk before it becomes an incident.
Technical Direction
- Partner with staff engineers to evolve the data ingestion, processing, and storage architecture so it scales ahead of customer growth.
- Set the technical direction for how these platforms generalize to serve Device Security and future products, not only Device Trust.
- Maintain a high bar for performance, security, and data integrity in a security-first enterprise environment.
- Identify and mitigate risks introduced by architectural change, migrations, and new dependencies before they reach production.
Delivery and Planning
- Scope, plan, and drive execution of platform initiatives with the team, balancing reliability investment against feature work.
- Coordinate cycle planning, design reviews, and project planning so the team ships predictably.
- Cascade priorities, progress, and risk to stakeholders across Device Trust and partner teams, keeping roadmaps transparent.
- Contribute to cross-team and departmental initiatives that raise the reliability bar across the engineering organization.
